PreK - 12th Grade Faith Formation

Here at St. Thomas Aquinas, we take great pride in providing several options for our youngest parishioners to grow in their faith and develop a life-long commitment to journeying with Christ through our Faith Formation Program.

Read below to understand our different offerings. They are all great options, and our hope is you and your child will enjoy participating in any of them.

Our 2018-19 Faith Formation Offerings for Youth are:

Wednesday Night Discipleship Groups: A grade-based, classroom approach, focusing on children growing, understanding and accepting what it means to be a Disciple of Christ. Youth will be placed in classrooms by grade level, have approximately 25 sessions between September and May, and utilize a standard curriculum as the source of their material. Their trained catechist leads the discussions and activities which assist the child in developing their faith in an appropriate way.  This option is best for those who learn by interacting with others in games, crafts, and talking with their peers. It meets on Wednesdays, 6-7 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas.

EDGE: A bonus offering for all of our Middle School Youth in 6-8th grade. It is a social opportunity for middle schoolers to grow in their faith and love being at church. EDGE is led by a caring group of youth ministers seeking to lead middle schoolers closer to Christ through icebreakers, learning activities, small group discussion, prayer and witness talks. EDGE meets twice a month for a large group outing or small group bible study.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS): A hands-on approach to faith formation based on self-direction by child within the prepared environment called an atrium. In CGS, trained catechists offer a place for the child to come and nurture this relationship with God through different stories and works. Level I is for children 3-6 years old (Pre-K to K), Level II for the 6-9 years old (1st – 3rd grade), and Level III for the 9-12 years old (4th – 6th grade). Classes for 2018-19 will be held at both St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames.

Homeschool: An approach to intensify the formation occuring at home. Parents attend 2-3 meetings throughout the year and are provided a curriculum is completed together with their child. There are a few choices for the homeschool curriculum, and parents will choose which option they determine will be best for their home after an intial meeting with Joe or Jen Weyers.

High School YDisciple:: A small group formation program. A small group of 5-8 teenagers of the same gender and grade meet with an adult mentor and peer leader(s) each week. YDisciple has a digital curriculum and is discussion based. The goal of YDisciple is to form dedicated disciples of Jesus Christ.

Confirmation:  Ninth graders enroll in our Confirmation Preparation program when then register for our weekly faith formation program. Confirmation preparation is completed with sponsor companions at our quarterly classes by utilizing the Chosen program by Ascension Press.

We hope all of our young people embrace their faith and form a desire to grow in their relationship with Jesus by providing ways for them to Learn about the Catholic Faith, Ask questions that interest them, and Participate within a community of their peers.

"[A]t the heart of catechesis we find, in essence, a Person, the Person of Jesus of Nazareth, "the only Son from the Father...full of grace and truth," who suffered and died for us and who now, after rising, is living with us forever... Accordingly, the definitive aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch but in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ: only He can lead us to the love of the Father in the Spirit and make us share in the life of the Holy Trinity." -Saint Pope John Paul II, "Catechesi Tradendae"
